Dental Inlays and Onlays

We offer dental inlays and onlays as a conservative treatment option that preserves as much of your natural tooth as possible, while restoring strength and function. These restorations are perfect for teeth that have suffered moderate decay or damage that doesn’t warrant a full crown.

Dental Inlays and Onlays in Waukesha, WI

Dental inlays and onlays are types of restorative treatments that are used to repair rear teeth with mild to moderate decay or fractured teeth that are not sufficiently damaged to require a crown. An inlay is similar to a filling and fits within the cusp tips (top edges) of the tooth. An onlay is a more substantial reconstruction that extends over the cusps of the treated tooth. Both options are made from durable materials such as porcelain, composite resin, or gold.

Benefits of Dental Inlays and Onlays

  • Durability: Inlays and onlays are made from tough, durable materials that strengthen teeth and last longer than traditional fillings.
  • Conservation of Tooth Structure: Unlike crowns, which require significant reshaping of the tooth, inlays and onlays preserve more of your natural tooth structure.
  • Enhanced Aesthetics: Made from materials that match the natural color of your teeth, inlays and onlays blend seamlessly, enhancing the appearance of your smile.
  • Fit and Comfort: Inlays and onlays are custom-fitted to your teeth, ensuring a comfortable fit and optimal functionality.

  • How are dental inlays and onlays applied?

Inlays and onlays require two appointments to complete the procedure. During the first visit, the filling is replaced, or the damaged or decaying area of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is prepared for the inlay or onlay. To ensure proper fit and bite, an impression of the tooth is made by the dentist and sent to a lab for fabrication. The dentist will then apply a temporary sealant on the tooth and schedule the next appointment.

At the second appointment, the temporary sealant is removed, and the dentist will make sure that the inlay or onlay fits correctly. If the fit is satisfactory, the inlay or onlay will be bonded to the tooth with a strong resin and polished to a smooth finish.

  • How do I know if I need an inlay or an onlay?

The decision between an inlay and an onlay depends on the extent of tooth damage. Inlays are used when the damage is within the tooth’s cusps, while onlays are necessary when the damage extends over one or more cusps.

  • How long do dental inlays and onlays last?

With proper care, dental inlays and onlays can last up to 30 years. They are highly durable and provide long-term solutions for tooth restoration.
